Bean Nighe's Refrain

Bean Nighe's Refrain

With this work I paired an audio recording of my granny reading a poem I wrote about the story of Bean Nighe

The significance of Bean Nighes story is how a woman suffered the tragedy of losing her child and was cursed to haunt rivers forever washing blood out of her clothes, and if one sees her she is an omen of death

To show this story through fabric I created a wedding dress to reflect how she has been married to her role forever and cursed to be a warning for impending doom for travellers

In this way I wanted to represent traditional marriage and how women can be tied to their labor for the sake of love

Through the fabric I used cheesecloth and distressed it and molded the fibers to interfacing to recreate a wet look. I also used embroidery and added metal work and beading. I also used dye to create the bloodied clothing. In this way I see this as more of a costume that pairs with the oral tradition of this story.

Washerwoman washerwoman,

Cleanse and toil

down the road from Rowardennan

Linen blouse with blood, soil

Your cries sharp, like winter frost on heather

Sounds like omens from long ago

To strike me down to the nether

Under earth of highlands down below

And here I shall haunt with needle to sew

Back together the linen to collect souls nighe owes
